Message from the President |
|
At West Chester University, we’re proud to stand beside our student veterans and ROTC cadets. We marvel at their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to both their education and service. On November 9, we had the honor of recognizing these outstanding individuals at the Military Scholarship Ceremony, held at the WCU Foundation. This event allows us to spotlight the achievements of our military students, including those who, like one of our students currently deployed overseas, continue their coursework against all odds. This academic year, 35 students received scholarships. Our commitment to supporting military-affiliated students is reflected in WCU’s Military Friendly Gold status and embodied by the Greg and Sandra Weisenstein Veterans Center, which has already supported more than 1,000 students this semester. Our entire University community works together to ensure student veterans receive the benefits they have earned.
President Laurie Bernotsky

Looking for the perfect gift for a WCU alum? |
|
Named after Grace D. McCarthy, the first Dean of Women at WCU, McCarthy Hall was a dormitory on campus located at the corner of Sharpless and Church Streets. Although the building no longer stands, the mailbox doors were salvaged, and a local craftsman turned them into beautiful banks using wood from trees throughout Chester County.

Alumni Spotlight: Lisa '88 & Paul Emrick '88 |
|
Lisa ’88 and Paul Emrick ’88 at first had not planned to attend West Chester, but their eventual decision to become Golden Rams set them on the path to a successful marriage and careers. The couple lives in the Allentown, PA, suburbs, where Paul is a Principal at NewEdge Wealth and leads the firm’s Lehigh Valley team. Lisa is a Registered Nurse for Penn State Health St. Joseph Urgent Care.
“I planned to go to a two-year nursing program,” Lisa explains. “But my father wanted me to go to college and get a four-year nursing degree.” With his encouragement, she enrolled at West Chester. Paul started his college career at Penn State, but it wasn’t the right fit. After taking several business courses at the local community college, he decided to study economics at West Chester.
Although the couple grew up in small towns just 25 miles apart – Lisa in Catasauqua, PA, and Paul in Bangor, PA – they first met at the University. They were married on August 27, 1988, just two months after their graduation. In the Spring of 1986, Paul joined the Army Reserve and subsequently participated in the WCU Army ROTC program. Upon graduation in 1988 Paul was commissioned and began his tour of active duty and soon after moved to Fort Sill, OK, where Paul completed his Field Artillery Officer training.
